Buried Cities & the Mud Flood "Evidence"

Basement windows, sunken doorways, streets that were supposedly "raised" after a catastrophe. Cities on two continents have extensively documented civic and archaeological records explaining exactly what happened to their street levels β€” and why the explanations differ by geography.

Chicago and Seattle both offer public tours of their historic underground spaces, and Moscow's cultural layer is a standard, peer-reviewed archaeological research subject. The history behind "buried" cities is not only documented, it's actively studied and, in the American cases, promoted as a tourist attraction precisely because it's well understood.

What's Being Pointed At

The central piece of physical "evidence" for the mud flood claim is architectural: older buildings, particularly in cities like Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle and various European capitals, where windows and doors sit partially or fully below current street level. Mainstream historians and architects describe these as basements or semi-basements β€” ordinary building features. Mud flood proponents argue they were originally full ground-floor windows, later half-buried by catastrophic flooding, and only later reclassified as "basements" by whoever rewrote the history.

A second, related observation cited as evidence: numerous 19th and early 20th-century photographs genuinely do show unusually empty city streets in some capital cities during certain periods β€” offered as evidence of a population wiped out or displaced by the flood.

The Horse Explanation

Architectural historian Robin Aitken, asked directly about the "mud" visible in old street photographs, gave a blunt, specific answer: "I think horses can answer for a lot of this... horse shβ€”t, horse hooves pounding the horse shβ€”t." Horse-drawn transport was the dominant mode of urban movement for essentially the entire 19th century, and horses produce large volumes of waste that, combined with unpaved or lightly paved streets and weather, created exactly the kind of muddy, worn street surfaces visible in period photographs β€” a mundane, well-documented feature of pre-automobile cities.

The United States β€” Documented Grade Changes

Two of the most-cited American cities in this claim underwent genuine, extensively documented civic engineering projects that physically raised their street grades β€” a real, deliberate, well-recorded process, not a mystery.

Chicago β€” Edward Mendel's 1860 lithograph, above, depicts one of the city's actual documented block-raisings: an entire row of masonry buildings on Lake Street, between Clark and LaSalle, lifted roughly four and a half feet on six thousand jackscrews operated by six hundred men, while businesses stayed open throughout. The whole grade-raising campaign, spanning the 1850s and 60s, was driven by a genuine public health crisis β€” the city sat barely above the level of Lake Michigan, drainage failed constantly, and an 1854 cholera outbreak killed roughly six percent of the population. Raising the streets was the solution engineer Ellis S. Chesbrough proposed to make a citywide sewer system possible at all.

Seattle β€” following the Great Seattle Fire of 1889, the city required new construction to be masonry rather than wood, and regraded its streets one to two storeys higher across the Pioneer Square district β€” visible above in 1906 regrade work using a steam shovel on 3rd Avenue. Pioneer Square had originally been built on filled tidelands and flooded regularly; the regrade also kept sewers from backing up at high tide. The result is the well-known Seattle Underground β€” original ground-floor storefronts that became literal basements once the streets around them rose β€” now a public, actively promoted walking tour precisely because the history is thoroughly documented, not hidden.

Europe β€” A Different Mechanism

The same "buried ground floor" observation appears constantly in European cities too β€” Paris, Moscow, St. Petersburg, London β€” but the explanation there is often a genuinely different, equally mundane mechanism: not sudden engineered grade-raising, but centuries of slow, ordinary organic accumulation.

Moscow & St. Petersburg β€” Russian and European archaeology uses a specific, heavily studied term for this: the cultural layer. In central Moscow, this anthropogenic soil layer β€” accumulated debris, construction waste and organic material from continuous habitation β€” is measured at 2 to 5 metres thick, reaching as much as 20 metres in low-lying areas. In St. Petersburg's historic centre, it measures roughly 80 to 180 centimetres in surveyed parks. The artefacts pictured above, recovered from within Moscow's cultural layer deposits, are exactly the kind of material (pottery, tools, construction debris) that forms this layer β€” dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating of material from the layer at sites including Red Square have been used to date phases of the city's early settlement directly. This is not flood sediment; it's centuries of a living, continuously rebuilt city depositing material on top of itself, one generation at a time.

Paris β€” the city's dramatically different street layout and building lines owe to Haussmann's renovation of Paris (1853–1870), a public works programme so large it demolished entire medieval neighbourhoods to build the wide boulevards Paris is now known for. The photograph above, taken by Charles Marville β€” appointed the City of Paris's official photographer in 1862 specifically to document neighbourhoods before their demolition β€” shows the clearance for the Avenue de l'OpΓ©ra. The project cost roughly 2.5 billion francs and employed a fifth of the city's workforce over nearly two decades. Any modern building sitting at a different level from its medieval-era neighbours in central Paris is very often standing on ground this single, exhaustively documented project physically reshaped.

Ordinary Urban Development

Beyond these specific, documented cases, the broader pattern of buildings appearing "sunken" reflects several ordinary, well-understood processes worldwide: construction on sloped terrain (a basement window is simply where the building meets a lower point in the natural grade), streets repaved and widened repeatedly over a century or more with each layer sitting slightly higher than the last, and straightforward redevelopment cycles where new construction is built up around and over older foundations.

The "Empty Streets" Photographs

Long exposure times in 19th-century photography are the direct, technical explanation for images showing apparently empty, deserted-looking city streets. Early cameras required exposures of several seconds to several minutes; moving pedestrians and vehicles simply didn't register on the film, leaving only stationary objects and buildings clearly visible β€” a well-known limitation of the technology of the period, not evidence of an empty city.
