Astrology Β· Minor Bodies

Asteroids & Centaurs

Beyond the Sun, Moon and eight planets, thousands of minor bodies orbit the Sun β€” and a handful have earned a real place in chart interpretation. The four largest asteroids, and Chiron the wounded healer, bridging Saturn and Uranus.

These are refinements, not replacements. Asteroid and centaur placements add specificity to themes already visible in the main chart β€” read as a secondary layer once the core chart is already understood.

Beyond the Ten Major Bodies

Standard Western astrology works with the Sun, Moon and eight planets. But thousands of minor bodies orbit the Sun too, and a handful have become genuinely established in astrological practice β€” first the four largest main-belt asteroids, discovered in the early 1800s, then Chiron and the other centaurs, discovered starting in 1977. These points add texture rather than replacing the core chart.

The Big Four Asteroids

Ceres
Nurture Β· Body Β· Cycles
Named for the grain goddess whose grief created the seasons. Nurturing, food, the body's needs, cycles of loss and reunion.
Pallas
Strategy Β· Pattern Β· Craft
Named for Athena, born fully armed. Strategic intelligence, pattern recognition, creative problem-solving.
Juno
Partnership Β· Commitment
Named for the goddess of marriage. Committed partnership, contract terms, fidelity and power balance.
Vesta
Devotion Β· Focus
Named for the hearth goddess. Single-pointed devotion, sacred or professional focus.

Chiron β€” The Wounded Healer

Chiron orbits erratically between Saturn and Uranus β€” a bridge between structured Saturn and disruptive, awakening Uranus. Named for the centaur who, unlike his violent kin, was a healer and mentor β€” yet carried an incurable wound of his own. In the chart, Chiron's sign and house are read as the location of a core wound that becomes, paradoxically, exactly where a person is most equipped to help others. The Chiron Return falls around age 50.

Other Centaurs

Pholus
β†’Killed by an accidentally self-inflicted poisoned arrow
β†’Small triggers, disproportionately large consequences
Nessus
β†’The centaur whose poisoned blood killed Heracles
β†’Abuse, power imbalance, cycles of harm finally seen and interrupted

Using Asteroids in a Chart

Most astrologers treat asteroid placements as refinements rather than headline features β€” worth checking once the Sun, Moon, planets, angles and houses are already understood. Ephemeris data for the four major asteroids and Chiron is standard in most chart software; the more obscure centaurs require specialised ephemerides.
