Astrocartography

Where in the world are your planets most powerfully expressed? Astrocartography maps your natal chart onto the globe — revealing the lines where each planet rises, sets, culminates and descends.

Astrocartography was developed by American astrologer Jim Lewis in the 1970s and trademarked under that name — the broader practice is also called Astro*Carto*Graphy (ACG) or locational astrology. Lewis's core insight: the same natal chart expresses differently depending on where on Earth you are. Moving to a location where a benefic planet rises or culminates can shift the entire quality of your life there — while moving to a line of Saturn or Pluto carries those planets' challenges with heightened intensity.

What Astrocartography Is

Your natal chart is calculated for the specific place and time of your birth. But the planets were simultaneously rising, setting and culminating at different longitudes around the entire Earth at that moment. Astrocartography maps these positions — drawing lines across the globe to show where each planet was on the Ascendant (rising), Descendant (setting), Midheaven (culminating) and IC (at the nadir) at the moment you were born.

Living near or visiting a planetary line intensifies that planet's influence in your life. Move to your Venus Ascendant line and relationships, beauty and pleasure tend to become more prominent. Move to your Saturn Midheaven line and career becomes demanding but potentially very rewarding through hard work. Move to your Jupiter Descendant line and partnerships and opportunities expand.

The effect is not all-or-nothing — it operates in a orb of influence (typically within 700–1,000 km of a line) and combines with other lines in the same region. A location may have multiple lines crossing or running parallel — each contributing its quality to the experience of living there.

Jim Lewis
The American astrologer (1941–1995) who developed and trademarked Astrocartography in the 1970s. His Atlas of Astrocartography and subsequent work established the practice. Lewis spent decades documenting the correlation between planetary lines and lived experience across thousands of clients.
ACG vs Relocation Chart
Astrocartography shows where planets were angular at birth. A relocation chart recalculates your entire chart for a different location — same planets, different house positions. Both are valid; ACG shows the energetic landscape, relocation shows the restructured chart. Most practitioners use both together.
The Four Angles
Each planet produces four lines: Ascendant (AS) — the planet was rising, associated with identity and how you appear; Midheaven (MC) — the planet was culminating, associated with career and public life; Descendant (DS) — the planet was setting, associated with relationships; IC — the planet was at the nadir, associated with home and roots.
Orb of Influence
You do not need to be exactly on a line to feel its effect. Most practitioners work with an orb of 700–1,000 km (roughly 7–10 degrees of longitude). Within this zone the planetary energy is noticeable; directly on the line it is at maximum intensity. Brief visits also carry an effect, though living there is much stronger.

The Four Line Types

Every planet produces four lines — one for each of the four angles of the chart. Understanding which angle a line falls on is as important as knowing which planet it is. The same planet on different angles produces very different experiences.

AS — Ascendant Line
Rising Line
The planet was on the eastern horizon at your birth — it rises where you are. The Ascendant rules identity, appearance and how others first perceive you. A planet on the AS line influences how you present yourself and how you are seen. Venus AS → you appear more attractive and charming. Mars AS → you appear more assertive and direct.
MC — Midheaven Line
Culminating Line
The planet was at the highest point of the sky — at the top of the chart. The Midheaven rules career, reputation and public life. A planet on the MC line powerfully affects your professional life and public standing in that location. Jupiter MC → career expansion and recognition. Saturn MC → demanding but potentially highly successful career through sustained effort.
DS — Descendant Line
Setting Line
The planet was on the western horizon — setting. The Descendant rules relationships, partnerships and what we attract from others. A planet on the DS line influences the quality of relationships formed in that location. Venus DS → deeply loving and harmonious partnerships. Mars DS → intense, passionate and sometimes conflictual relationships.
IC — Imum Coeli Line
Nadir Line
The planet was at the lowest point — beneath the Earth. The IC rules home, family, roots and the private self. A planet on the IC line influences the quality of your domestic life and inner world in that location. Moon IC → deep emotional nourishment and a sense of home. Saturn IC → a demanding but potentially stable and enduring domestic foundation.

All Planets — What Each Line Brings

Each planet brings its essential quality to whichever angle it falls on. The descriptions below give the general flavour of each planet's line — the specific angle (AS/MC/DS/IC) then colours how that energy manifests. No line is purely positive or negative — even challenging lines like Saturn or Pluto can produce profound growth when approached consciously.

Sun
Identity · Vitality · Recognition
Sun lines are among the most sought after — they bring vitality, confidence, recognition and a strong sense of self. You feel more authentically yourself near a Sun line, and others see and appreciate you more readily. The Sun rules leadership, creativity and the desire to shine.
Sun AS
Strong presence, leadership, confidence. You are seen and recognised.
Sun MC
Career success, fame, public recognition. A powerful location for ambition.
Sun DS
Relationships with charismatic, powerful people. Partners may overshadow you.
Sun IC
Strong family identity, pride in home. Deep roots and domestic confidence.
Moon
Emotion · Nourishment · Home
Moon lines bring emotional depth, sensitivity and a sense of belonging. You feel more at home near a Moon line — more emotionally open, more nourished. These locations often feel instantly familiar. The Moon rules the domestic sphere, women, the public and intuition.
Moon AS
Emotional openness, nurturing presence. You feel and appear more sensitive.
Moon MC
Public nurturing role, working with women or the public. Emotional career.
Moon DS
Nurturing relationships, emotionally close partnerships. Family-forming location.
Moon IC
Deep sense of home. Ideal for settling down and putting down roots.
Mercury
Communication · Mind · Learning
Mercury lines bring mental stimulation, communication opportunities and a more active social and intellectual life. Writing, speaking, teaching and learning are all heightened. These locations tend to be busy, mentally engaging and full of information and conversation.
Mercury AS
Witty, communicative presence. You appear more articulate and curious.
Mercury MC
Career in writing, speaking, teaching or media. Mental work thrives.
Mercury DS
Intellectual partnerships, stimulating relationships. Meeting of minds.
Mercury IC
Busy domestic life, many siblings or neighbours. Home as hub of information.
Venus
Love · Beauty · Pleasure · Art
Venus lines are among the most popular in astrocartography — they bring beauty, pleasure, love and artistic appreciation. Life near a Venus line tends to feel more enjoyable, relationships come more easily and the aesthetic environment is more pleasing. These are often excellent locations for creative work.
Venus AS
You appear more attractive and charming. Effortless social grace and magnetism.
Venus MC
Creative career, work in beauty or art. Professional recognition for aesthetic gifts.
Venus DS
Loving, harmonious partnerships. One of the best lines for finding lasting love.
Venus IC
Beautiful home, pleasure in domestic life. A comfortable and aesthetic sanctuary.
Mars
Action · Drive · Conflict · Passion
Mars lines bring energy, drive and assertiveness — but also conflict, competition and the risk of accidents or aggression. Life near a Mars line tends to be more active and demanding. These are powerful locations for athletic or entrepreneurial pursuits but can be exhausting for long-term residence.
Mars AS
Bold, assertive presence. High energy — but risk of conflict and accidents.
Mars MC
Competitive career. Can achieve a lot — but workplace conflict is common.
Mars DS
Intense, passionate relationships — but often turbulent and conflictual.
Mars IC
Restless home life. Difficulty settling — frequent moves or domestic conflict.
Jupiter
Expansion · Opportunity · Luck · Growth
Jupiter lines are widely considered the most universally beneficial in astrocartography — they bring expansion, opportunity, optimism and good fortune. Life near a Jupiter line tends to feel more abundant and fortunate. The challenge: Jupiter can also bring excess, overindulgence and the tendency to overextend.
Jupiter AS
Generous, optimistic presence. You appear fortunate and expansive to others.
Jupiter MC
Career expansion, recognition, abundance. Excellent for professional growth.
Jupiter DS
Fortunate, expansive partnerships. Meeting people who bring opportunity.
Jupiter IC
Abundance in home life. A generous, spacious domestic environment.
Saturn
Discipline · Restriction · Mastery · Karma
Saturn lines are among the most challenging — they bring restriction, hard work and karmic lessons. Life near a Saturn line tends to be demanding and serious, with a feeling of increased responsibility and limitation. However, Saturn also brings structure, discipline and the potential for genuine mastery and enduring achievement if engaged with consciously.
Saturn AS
Serious, reserved presence. You appear older and more responsible. Isolation risk.
Saturn MC
Demanding career but potential for great achievement through sustained effort.
Saturn DS
Serious, committed relationships — but often difficult and restrictive.
Saturn IC
Heavy domestic responsibilities. A serious, austere but potentially stable home.
Uranus
Change · Liberation · Disruption · Innovation
Uranus lines bring sudden change, disruption and liberation. Life near a Uranus line tends to be unpredictable and exciting — full of unexpected developments that break up established patterns. These are excellent locations for innovation and awakening, but challenging for anyone seeking stability and routine.
Uranus AS
Eccentric, unconventional presence. You appear more original and unpredictable.
Uranus MC
Innovative career, sudden changes in profession. Tech and invention thrive.
Uranus DS
Unconventional relationships, sudden meetings and departures.
Uranus IC
Unstable home life, frequent moves. Liberation from family patterns.
Neptune
Dreams · Spirituality · Illusion · Dissolution
Neptune lines bring sensitivity, creativity, spiritual depth and the dissolution of boundaries — but also confusion, illusion and the risk of being deceived or losing oneself. Highly creative and spiritually sensitive people often find Neptune lines inspiring. For others, these locations can feel disorientating, ungrounded or prone to self-deception.
Neptune AS
Mysterious, otherworldly presence. Creative depth — but identity can dissolve.
Neptune MC
Artistic or spiritual career. Risk of confusion or deception in professional life.
Neptune DS
Romantic, idealistic relationships — but risk of illusion and disappointment.
Neptune IC
Dreamy, spiritual home life. Boundaries between self and family can dissolve.
Pluto
Transformation · Power · Intensity · Rebirth
Pluto lines bring intensity, transformation and the confrontation with power — both personal and collective. Life near a Pluto line tends to be deeply transformative and not always comfortable. These locations can catalyse profound personal change, but they also carry the risk of power struggles, obsession and the darker dimensions of human nature.
Pluto AS
Intense, magnetic presence. Powerful but potentially overwhelming to others.
Pluto MC
Powerful career — but intense power dynamics and potential for collapse and rebirth.
Pluto DS
Transformative, obsessive relationships. Deep bonds — and deep wounds.
Pluto IC
Deep transformation of roots and family patterns. Ancestral healing.

Parans & Local Space

Parans
Parans (short for paranatellonta) occur when two planets are simultaneously on angles at a given latitude — even if their lines don't cross at that point. At the latitude where two planets are simultaneously angular, their energies combine. A Jupiter-Venus paran brings both planets' qualities together at that latitude, running east-west across the globe.
Local Space Astrology
A related but distinct system — Local Space maps the planets' directions from your birth location (not the globe-wide ACG lines). Each planet points in a specific compass direction from where you were born; moving in that direction activates the planet. You can also apply Local Space to your current home, drawing directional lines from there.
Relocated Chart
Recalculating your natal chart for a different location — same planets and aspects, but different house positions. The relocated chart shows how the planetary energies redistribute across the houses in a new location. Used alongside ACG lines, it gives a complete picture of how a location affects your chart.
Cyclo*Carto*Graphy
Jim Lewis also developed CCG — mapping not the natal chart but planetary return and progressed charts onto the globe. This allows timing: which locations are most activated during a particular planetary return or progressed period. Useful for planning travel, relocation or major life decisions at specific times.

Working with Your Map

Getting Your Map
Free ACG maps are available at astro.com (Astrodienst) — log in, enter your birth data and look for the Astro*Carto*Graphy option under Extended Chart Selection. The lines are colour-coded by planet. Paid services like Sirius software offer more detailed analysis.
Start with What You Know
The best validation of astrocartography is retrospective — look at places you have already lived or visited and find their lines. Does a location where you fell in love have a Venus line? A place where your career thrived have a Jupiter MC line? A difficult period in a city have a Saturn line? Your own experience is the best teacher.
Prioritise for Purpose
Choose lines based on what you want from a location. Career focus → look for Jupiter or Sun MC lines. Relationship → Venus DS. Spiritual development → Neptune or Pluto lines. Rest and healing → Moon IC. Creative work → Venus or Neptune AS. No single location will have only benefic lines — assess the overall picture.
Visit Before Moving
Even a short visit to a location activates its lines. Travel to prospective relocation destinations and pay attention to how you feel there — who you meet, what opportunities arise, how your energy shifts. The body often registers the planetary quality of a place before the mind has processed it.

An Honest Look

There is no controlled scientific research validating astrocartography. The anecdotal evidence is compelling — thousands of people report striking correlations between planetary lines and their experiences in different locations — but anecdote is not proof. Confirmation bias (noticing what fits, ignoring what doesn't) is a genuine risk.

Lines do not operate in isolation. A location may have multiple lines running through it, and their interaction is complex. A Venus line crossing a Saturn line produces a very different experience than either alone. The overall chart of a location — its history, culture, economy, climate — matters enormously and cannot be reduced to planetary lines alone.

Do not make major life decisions based solely on ACG. Many people have flourished in locations with supposedly difficult lines; many have struggled in supposedly benefic ones. Astrocartography is a useful lens, not a deterministic map. Use it alongside practical research about a location — cost of living, language, culture, climate, opportunities.

The genuine value of astrocartography is as a framework for reflection and exploration — a way of asking "what kind of experience am I seeking, and which of my planetary energies might support that?" Many people find the map illuminates patterns they already half-knew, and that visiting suggested locations produces meaningful, if unprovable, experiences.
