Your natal chart is calculated for the specific place and time of your birth. But the planets were simultaneously rising, setting and culminating at different longitudes around the entire Earth at that moment. Astrocartography maps these positions — drawing lines across the globe to show where each planet was on the Ascendant (rising), Descendant (setting), Midheaven (culminating) and IC (at the nadir) at the moment you were born.
Living near or visiting a planetary line intensifies that planet's influence in your life. Move to your Venus Ascendant line and relationships, beauty and pleasure tend to become more prominent. Move to your Saturn Midheaven line and career becomes demanding but potentially very rewarding through hard work. Move to your Jupiter Descendant line and partnerships and opportunities expand.
The effect is not all-or-nothing — it operates in a orb of influence (typically within 700–1,000 km of a line) and combines with other lines in the same region. A location may have multiple lines crossing or running parallel — each contributing its quality to the experience of living there.
Jim Lewis
The American astrologer (1941–1995) who developed and trademarked Astrocartography in the 1970s. His Atlas of Astrocartography and subsequent work established the practice. Lewis spent decades documenting the correlation between planetary lines and lived experience across thousands of clients.
ACG vs Relocation Chart
Astrocartography shows where planets were angular at birth. A relocation chart recalculates your entire chart for a different location — same planets, different house positions. Both are valid; ACG shows the energetic landscape, relocation shows the restructured chart. Most practitioners use both together.
The Four Angles
Each planet produces four lines: Ascendant (AS) — the planet was rising, associated with identity and how you appear; Midheaven (MC) — the planet was culminating, associated with career and public life; Descendant (DS) — the planet was setting, associated with relationships; IC — the planet was at the nadir, associated with home and roots.
Orb of Influence
You do not need to be exactly on a line to feel its effect. Most practitioners work with an orb of 700–1,000 km (roughly 7–10 degrees of longitude). Within this zone the planetary energy is noticeable; directly on the line it is at maximum intensity. Brief visits also carry an effect, though living there is much stronger.
