Reading the Whole Wheel

In the 1930s, American astrologer Marc Edmund Jones proposed that beyond individual aspects, the overall distribution of the ten visible planets around the 360° chart wheel forms recognisable shapes — and that the shape itself, independent of sign or house meaning, says something about how a person organises and directs their energy.

The classification remains one of the most widely taught frameworks in modern Western astrology for getting a fast, birds-eye read on a chart before diving into the sign-by-sign, house-by-house detail.

The Seven Shapes

Bundle

Concentrated

All planets clustered within a third (120°) of the wheel — a tightly focused, specialist personality with a narrow but deep range of concern.

Bowl

Half the Wheel

All planets within one half (180°) of the chart — a self-contained personality who tends to "scoop up" and act on what falls within their scope, uninterested in what lies outside it.

Bucket

Bowl + Handle

A Bowl shape with one outlying planet on the opposite side, acting as a "handle." That handle planet becomes an outlet for the whole bowl's energy — a single, defining channel through which everything else expresses.

Locomotive

Two-Thirds Span

Planets occupying two-thirds (240°) of the wheel, leaving one dark third empty. Read as driven and self-propelled — the empty sector functions like open track, with the planet leading it acting as the engine.

Splash

Evenly Spread

Planets distributed roughly evenly around the whole 360° wheel. Versatile and wide-ranging, but sometimes scattered — many interests pursued at once rather than one deep focus.

Irregular Clusters

An uneven, asymmetrical spread — clusters and gaps with no clean geometric shape. Read as an independent, non-conformist energy distribution that resists tidy categorisation, fittingly.

Two Opposing Clusters

Planets grouped into two clusters roughly opposite each other, with gaps in between. Associated with a chronically balancing, both-sides-of-the-argument temperament, weighing opposing pulls against each other.
