Essential Dignities

Essential dignity is a traditional, sign-based scoring system — inherited from Hellenistic and later medieval astrology — for how comfortably a planet operates in the sign it occupies, independent of any aspect it makes to other planets. A planet with strong essential dignity is considered able to express its nature cleanly and effectively; a poorly dignified planet is thought to express its nature in a distorted, weakened, or effortful way.

Rulership (or domicile) is a planet's home sign — Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and so on — where a planet is considered to operate at full natural strength, comfortable and unimpeded. Exaltation is a step further still: a specific sign, different from rulership, where a planet is considered honoured above its normal operating level — Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn — a placement of special favour rather than mere comfort.

Detriment is the sign opposite a planet's rulership — Mars in Libra, Venus in Aries and Scorpio — where the planet is considered to be operating in genuinely unfamiliar territory, working against its natural grain. Fall is the sign opposite a planet's exaltation — Sun in Libra, Moon in Scorpio — traditionally read as the single most uncomfortable placement available to that planet, the mirror opposite of its position of greatest honour.

Beyond rulership and exaltation, traditional astrology assigns each element (fire, earth, air, water) a set of triplicity rulers — planets considered dignified by day or by night across all three signs of that element — plus finer-grained term and face rulerships that divide each sign into smaller degree ranges with their own assigned rulers. Together these five dignity types (rulership, exaltation, triplicity, term, face) formed the basis for calculating a planet's overall dignity score in Hellenistic astrology, and a planet holding none of them is called peregrine (see Planetary Conditions).
