The complete reference for Jyotish — the ancient Indian system of astrology based on fixed star positions, 27 lunar mansions, planetary periods and the science of light.
Jyotish (ज्योतिष) means "science of light" in Sanskrit. It is one of the six Vedangas — limbs of the Vedas — and has been practised for over 5000 years. Unlike Western tropical astrology which measures from the Spring Equinox, Jyotish measures from fixed star positions, making it a sidereal system. The result is a zodiac that reflects the actual constellations visible in the night sky.
The core difference is the starting point of the zodiac. Tropical astrology anchors to the Spring Equinox (0° Aries = March equinox), which moves slightly each year due to the Earth's axial wobble — the precession of the equinoxes. Sidereal astrology anchors to fixed stars. Over 2000 years, this has created a gap of approximately 23–24 degrees between the two systems.

* Exact dates vary by year and depend on which Ayanamsa is used. Always calculate using your precise birth data.
The Ayanamsa (अयनांश) is the angular difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs at any given moment. It increases by approximately 50.3 arc seconds per year due to the precession of the equinoxes — the slow wobble of Earth's axis that completes one full cycle every ~25,772 years. Different schools of Jyotish use slightly different Ayanamsa values, which is why your sidereal chart can vary depending on which system is applied.
The Nakshatras (नक्षत्र) are the 27 lunar mansions of Jyotish — the most distinctive feature of Indian astrology. Each nakshatra spans 13°20' of the sidereal zodiac, dividing the 360° circle into 27 equal parts corresponding to the Moon's approximate daily movement. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet (Nakshatra Lord), a symbol, a deity and specific qualities. The nakshatra of your natal Moon is especially significant — it determines your Dasha sequence and reveals the deepest texture of your emotional nature.
Jyotish works with nine Grahas (ग्रह — "that which grasps") rather than the ten planets of Western astrology. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not used. Instead, Jyotish includes Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes — as shadow planets of immense karmic significance. Each Graha has a sign of ownership (Moolatrikona and own sign), exaltation and debilitation.
The Vimshottari Dasha (विंशोत्तरी दशा) system is the most widely used timing system in Jyotish. It divides the 120-year human life cycle into planetary periods governed by each of the nine Grahas. Your birth nakshatra (specifically the Moon's nakshatra) determines which Dasha you begin life in and how many years remain of that period. Sub-periods (Antardasha), sub-sub-periods (Pratyantardasha) and further divisions allow extraordinary precision in timing life events.

Total Cycle: 120 Years
Sun(6) + Moon(10) + Mars(7) + Rahu(18) + Jupiter(16) + Saturn(19) + Mercury(17) + Ketu(7) + Venus(20) = 120 years — the traditional maximum human lifespan in Vedic thought. Your birth nakshatra determines the starting point. If born in Rohini nakshatra (Moon-ruled), you begin in Moon Dasha.
In Jyotish, the 12 houses are called Bhavas (भाव). The most critical difference from Western astrology is the central importance of the Lagna (Ascendant) — the first house lord's strength determines the overall chart quality. Houses are classified as: Kendra (angular: 1,4,7,10 — power), Trikona (trinal: 1,5,9 — dharma/fortune), Upachaya (growing: 3,6,10,11 — improvement over time) and Dusthana (difficult: 6,8,12 — challenges).
| Bhava | Sanskrit Name | Classification | Jyotish Themes | Western Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st · Lagna | Tanu Bhava | Kendra + Trikona | Self, body, personality, vitality, overall life quality | 1st House (Ascendant) |
| 2nd | Dhana Bhava | Maraka (death-inflicting) | Wealth, family, speech, food, right eye, accumulated resources | 2nd House |
| 3rd | Sahaja Bhava | Upachaya | Courage, siblings, short journeys, communication, effort, arts | 3rd House |
| 4th | Sukha Bhava | Kendra | Mother, home, happiness, vehicles, land, heart, education | 4th House (IC) |

Yogas (योग) are specific planetary combinations in a chart that produce notable results — for good or ill. There are hundreds of yogas in classical Jyotish texts. The most powerful are those formed by the lords of Kendra (1,4,7,10) and Trikona (1,5,9) houses — these create Raja Yogas (royal combinations for power and success). Yogas must be evaluated for strength — a yoga formed by debilitated or combust planets gives diminished results.
