Sidereal Astrology

The complete reference for Jyotish — the ancient Indian system of astrology based on fixed star positions, 27 lunar mansions, planetary periods and the science of light.

Jyotish (ज्योतिष) means "science of light" in Sanskrit. It is one of the six Vedangas — limbs of the Vedas — and has been practised for over 5000 years. Unlike Western tropical astrology which measures from the Spring Equinox, Jyotish measures from fixed star positions, making it a sidereal system. The result is a zodiac that reflects the actual constellations visible in the night sky.

Sidereal vs Tropical

The core difference is the starting point of the zodiac. Tropical astrology anchors to the Spring Equinox (0° Aries = March equinox), which moves slightly each year due to the Earth's axial wobble — the precession of the equinoxes. Sidereal astrology anchors to fixed stars. Over 2000 years, this has created a gap of approximately 23–24 degrees between the two systems.

The Ayanamsa

The Ayanamsa (अयनांश) is the angular difference between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs at any given moment. It increases by approximately 50.3 arc seconds per year due to the precession of the equinoxes — the slow wobble of Earth's axis that completes one full cycle every ~25,772 years. Different schools of Jyotish use slightly different Ayanamsa values, which is why your sidereal chart can vary depending on which system is applied.

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha)
~23°51' (2024) · Official government of India
The most widely used Ayanamsa in traditional Jyotish. Adopted as the official standard by the Indian government in 1955. Anchored to the fixed star Chitra (Spica) at 0° Libra sidereal. Used by the vast majority of Vedic astrologers worldwide.
Fagan-Bradley
~24°02' (2024) · Western Sidereal
Developed by Cyril Fagan and Donald Bradley in the 1950s for Western sidereal astrology. Differs from Lahiri by approximately 0°11'. Used primarily by Western astrologers who work with sidereal positions but retain Western interpretive frameworks.
Raman
~22°22' (2024) · B.V. Raman
Developed by the influential Indian astrologer B.V. Raman. Differs slightly from Lahiri and is used by a significant school of Jyotish practitioners, particularly in South India. Results in planetary positions approximately 1.5° different from Lahiri.
True Chitrapaksha
Varies · Star-based calculation
A variant of Lahiri that uses the actual current position of the star Chitra rather than a fixed epoch calculation. Produces slightly different results as it accounts for the star's proper motion. Used by some contemporary Jyotishis seeking maximum astronomical precision.
Krishnamurti (KP)
~23°51' + corrections · KP System
Used in the Krishnamurti Paddhati (KP) system — a highly precise predictive branch of Jyotish developed by K.S. Krishnamurti. Similar to Lahiri but with specific corrections for stellar sub-lord calculations unique to the KP methodology.

The 27 Nakshatras

The Nakshatras (नक्षत्र) are the 27 lunar mansions of Jyotish — the most distinctive feature of Indian astrology. Each nakshatra spans 13°20' of the sidereal zodiac, dividing the 360° circle into 27 equal parts corresponding to the Moon's approximate daily movement. Each nakshatra has a ruling planet (Nakshatra Lord), a symbol, a deity and specific qualities. The nakshatra of your natal Moon is especially significant — it determines your Dasha sequence and reveals the deepest texture of your emotional nature.

The Nine Grahas

Jyotish works with nine Grahas (ग्रह — "that which grasps") rather than the ten planets of Western astrology. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not used. Instead, Jyotish includes Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes — as shadow planets of immense karmic significance. Each Graha has a sign of ownership (Moolatrikona and own sign), exaltation and debilitation.

Surya — Sun
सूर्य · Soul · Atmakaraka
The king of the Grahas. Surya represents the soul, father, authority and vitality. Unlike Western astrology where the Sun is always positive, in Jyotish the Sun is a natural malefic — powerful but demanding. Planets near the Sun are "combust" and weakened.

Chandra — Moon

Vimshottari Dasha

The Vimshottari Dasha (विंशोत्तरी दशा) system is the most widely used timing system in Jyotish. It divides the 120-year human life cycle into planetary periods governed by each of the nine Grahas. Your birth nakshatra (specifically the Moon's nakshatra) determines which Dasha you begin life in and how many years remain of that period. Sub-periods (Antardasha), sub-sub-periods (Pratyantardasha) and further divisions allow extraordinary precision in timing life events.

Bhavas — The 12 Houses

In Jyotish, the 12 houses are called Bhavas (भाव). The most critical difference from Western astrology is the central importance of the Lagna (Ascendant) — the first house lord's strength determines the overall chart quality. Houses are classified as: Kendra (angular: 1,4,7,10 — power), Trikona (trinal: 1,5,9 — dharma/fortune), Upachaya (growing: 3,6,10,11 — improvement over time) and Dusthana (difficult: 6,8,12 — challenges).

Key Yogas

Yogas (योग) are specific planetary combinations in a chart that produce notable results — for good or ill. There are hundreds of yogas in classical Jyotish texts. The most powerful are those formed by the lords of Kendra (1,4,7,10) and Trikona (1,5,9) houses — these create Raja Yogas (royal combinations for power and success). Yogas must be evaluated for strength — a yoga formed by debilitated or combust planets gives diminished results.

Raja Yoga
राज योग · Royal Combination
The most celebrated yoga in Jyotish. Formed when lords of Kendra houses (1,4,7,10) and Trikona houses (1,5,9) conjoin, aspect each other or exchange signs. Grants authority, success, political power and recognition. Strength depends on the houses involved and planetary dignity.
Kendra lord + Trikona lord in conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange
Gaja Kesari Yoga
गज केसरी योग · Elephant-Lion
Formed when Jupiter is in a Kendra (1,4,7,10) from the Moon. One of the most auspicious and common yogas — grants intelligence, eloquence, fame and good fortune. The strength depends on Jupiter's dignity and the houses involved.

Dhana Yoga
धन योग · Wealth Combination
Planetary combinations that indicate significant wealth accumulation. Formed by the lords of the 2nd (accumulated wealth), 5th (past merit), 9th (fortune) and 11th (income) houses in mutual connection. Multiple Dhana Yogas compound to indicate exceptional prosperity.
Lords of 2nd, 5th, 9th, 11th in conjunction or mutual aspect
Hamsa Yoga
हंस योग · Swan · Pancha Mahapurusha
One of the five Pancha Mahapurusha (great person) yogas. Formed when Jupiter occupies its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exaltation (Cancer) in a Kendra house. Grants exceptional wisdom, spirituality, a noble character and a life of dharmic service.

Formed when Venus occupies Taurus, Libra (own signs) or Pisces (exaltation) in a Kendra. Grants beauty, artistic excellence, material luxury, romantic success and refined aesthetic sensibility. One of the most pleasant yogas to have in a chart.
Venus in own/exaltation sign in Kendra (1,4,7,10)
Kala Sarpa Yoga
काल सर्प योग · Serpent of Time
Formed when all seven classical planets fall between Rahu and Ketu (all on one side of the nodal axis). A controversial and much-debated yoga — some see it as intensely challenging, others as a karmic intensifier that can produce both extremes of fate. Requires careful analysis of the chart as a whole.
All planets (Sun–Saturn) hemmed between Rahu and Ketu
Viparita Raja Yoga
विपरीत राज योग · Reversed Royal
Formed when lords of the Dusthana houses (6,8,12) occupy other Dusthana houses. Counterintuitively produces positive results — the negative energies cancel each other out. Often indicates rise after great difficulty, success through crisis, or gain through others' losses.
Lords of 6th, 8th, 12th in mutual exchange or occupation of each other's houses
Chandra Mangala Yoga
चन्द्र मंगल योग · Moon-Mars
Formed when the Moon and Mars conjoin or aspect each other. Grants entrepreneurial drive, financial acumen and the courage to pursue wealth. Can also indicate a sharp or passionate emotional nature. One of the classic wealth-producing combinations.
Moon and Mars in conjunction or mutual 7th aspect
Kemdrum Yoga
केमद्रुम योग · Challenging Moon
Formed when no planet occupies the 2nd or 12th house from the Moon, and no planet conjoins the Moon. Can indicate emotional isolation, instability and difficulty finding support. However, if the Moon is strong and well-placed, its negative effects are significantly reduced.
No planets in 2nd or 12th from Moon, and no planet conjoining Moon
