The ancient art of reading character, potential and life patterns from the hand — practised for over 5000 years across India, China, Greece and the Arabic world.
Palmistry (also called chiromancy or hand reading) is one of humanity's oldest divinatory arts. The hand is understood as a map of the individual — the dominant hand reveals the conscious life, choices made and the path being walked. The non-dominant hand reveals innate potential, karmic gifts and the soul's original blueprint. Together they show the gap — or harmony — between who you were born to be and who you are becoming.
Which hand to read? The traditional rule: men read the right hand as the active/dominant hand; women read the left hand as the active/dominant hand. This reflects the classical understanding of masculine (solar, right) and feminine (lunar, left) energies. However many modern palmists read the dominant hand regardless of gender — and always compare both hands. The non-dominant hand in both cases shows the soul's original blueprint at birth; the dominant hand shows how life has shaped and expressed that blueprint over time. Significant differences between the hands are among the most revealing aspects of any palm reading.
The overall shape of the hand — the ratio of palm to fingers and the shape of both — corresponds to the four classical elements. This is the first and most fundamental reading, establishing the person's basic temperament before any lines are examined.
The four major lines are present on virtually every hand and form the foundation of a palm reading. Their length, depth, clarity, breaks and markings all carry meaning. A deep, clear line indicates a strong, consistent energy in that area of life. A faint or broken line suggests variability, challenge or transition.
The mounts are the fleshy pads at the base of each finger and at the outer edge of the palm. Each is named after a planet and carries that planet's qualities. A well-developed mount (firm, prominent) indicates a strong expression of its planet's energy. A flat or absent mount suggests those qualities are less dominant. An overdeveloped mount (very puffy, soft) may indicate excess or imbalance of those qualities.
| Mount | Location | Planet | Well developed | Underdeveloped |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mount of Jupiter | Base of index finger | Jupiter | Leadership, ambition, confidence, spiritual inclination, love of learning | Lack of confidence, poor self-image, avoidance of responsibility |
| Mount of Saturn | Base of middle finger | Saturn | Wisdom, discipline, seriousness, love of solitude, philosophical depth | Moodiness, pessimism, difficulty with structure and commitment |
| Mount of Apollo (Sun) | Base of ring finger | Sun | Creativity, love of beauty, warmth, artistic talent, success and recognition | Lack of creativity, poor aesthetic sense, difficulty finding joy |
| Mount of Mercury | Base of little finger | Mercury | Communication, wit, business acumen, adaptability, healing gifts | Poor communication, difficulty in business, lack of adaptability |
| Mount of Venus | Base of thumb (large pad) | Venus | Love, passion, vitality, sensuality, warmth, generosity, love of life | Coldness, lack of empathy, low vitality, difficulty giving or receiving love |
| Mount of Luna (Moon) | Outer edge, lower palm | Moon | Imagination, intuition, psychic sensitivity, creativity, love of travel | Poor imagination, emotional flatness, disconnection from intuition |
| Mount of Mars (Active) | Inner edge, below thumb | Mars | Courage, physical energy, assertiveness, willingness to fight for what's right | Passivity, lack of courage, difficulty with confrontation |
| Mount of Mars (Passive) | Outer edge, middle palm | Mars | Moral courage, persistence, ability to endure, resistance to pressure | Lack of endurance, giving up under pressure, moral weakness |
Each finger is ruled by a planet and governs a specific domain of life. The length, straightness, flexibility and tip shape of each finger all carry meaning. Tip shapes: Pointed = psychic, artistic; Conic = creative, sensitive; Square = practical, logical; Spatulate = energetic, original.
The Three Phalanges
Each finger divides into three sections (phalanges), each governing a different level of expression. The top phalange (fingertip) governs the spiritual/intuitive expression of that finger's domain. The middle phalange governs the mental/practical expression. The bottom phalange (nearest the palm) governs the material/physical expression. The longest phalange on any finger indicates where that finger's energy is most prominently expressed in daily life.
