Crystals & Stones

The mineral kingdom as a tool for energy work — the properties, traditions and practical uses of working with crystals and stones, with an honest look at what is known and what remains uncertain.

An honest note: The properties attributed to crystals come from a mixture of geological understanding, centuries of folk tradition, intuitive experience and — in contemporary practice — a great deal of cultural transmission that varies considerably between sources. Scientific evidence for specific crystal properties is limited. What is well-documented is that humans across cultures and history have worked with stones as tools for focus, intention and ceremonial grounding. We present crystal lore as a living tradition — useful, beautiful and worthy of engagement — without claiming it as established science.

How Crystals Work

Piezoelectric Effect
Quartz crystals produce an electrical charge when mechanical pressure is applied — this is scientifically established and is the basis of quartz watches, ultrasound technology and electronic oscillators. Whether this extends to subtle energy effects is debated.
Structured Lattices
Crystals have highly ordered atomic structures — repeating geometric lattices. In esoteric understanding, this geometric order resonates with specific frequencies of consciousness and energy, making different crystal structures naturally attuned to different qualities.
Colour Resonance
The colour of a crystal reflects its mineralogical composition — and colour itself carries wavelength and frequency. Working with crystals by colour connects to chromotherapy principles and the chakra colour system, regardless of any additional mineral properties.
Intention Anchoring
Whatever the mechanism, crystals serve as powerful physical anchors for intention — holding an object while focusing on a goal engages tactile memory and the unconscious mind. This alone — completely explicable psychologically — justifies their use in ritual and meditation.

Essential Stones

Clear Quartz

Care, Cleansing & Programming

Crystals are understood to absorb and hold energy — both their own intrinsic qualities and the energy of environments and people they contact. Regular cleansing clears accumulated energy and returns the stone to its natural state. Programming (setting intention) aligns the stone's energy with a specific purpose. This is not merely ritual theatre — it is a practice of conscious attention and intention.

Moonlight
Leave overnight under the Full Moon (outdoors or on a windowsill). Gentle and safe for almost all stones. The Full Moon is most powerful but any moonlight cleanses and charges. Safe for water-soluble and sun-sensitive stones.
Sunlight
A few hours in sunlight energises and charges. Avoid for: Amethyst and Citrine (fade), Aquamarine, Fluorite, Rose Quartz and other light-sensitive stones. Best for grounding, earth-element stones.
Running Water
Hold under running water (natural stream is ideal, tap water works) for 1–5 minutes with cleansing intention. AVOID for: Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Kyanite, Angelite, Lepidolite and other water-soluble or porous stones.
Sound
Sound waves penetrate all matter — a singing bowl, bell, tuning fork or even vocal toning cleanses any stone safely. Particularly good for large collections or stones that can't be moved. Place near or surround with sound for several minutes.
Smoke / Smudging
Pass crystals through sacred smoke — palo santo, white sage, frankincense or cedar. Ancient and universal method. Safe for all stones. The smoke carries the intention of clearing and returns the stone to its natural state.
Selenite or Quartz
Place on a selenite plate or near a large quartz cluster overnight. Self-cleansing stones cleanse other stones placed on or near them. The most passive and consistent method — excellent for regular maintenance.

Programming a Crystal

After cleansing, hold the crystal in both hands. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply until you feel present and centred. State your intention clearly — either silently or aloud: "I programme this [crystal name] to [specific intention]. May it serve the highest good." Feel the intention entering the stone. Place it somewhere meaningful — on your altar, by your bed, in your pocket. Repeat whenever the intention needs refreshing.
