Ritual & Moon Cycles

The oldest human technology for conscious living — working with the Moon's 29.5-day cycle to align intention, action and release with the natural rhythms of light and darkness.

The Moon has governed human life since before recorded history — calendars, agriculture, medicine, ceremony and spiritual practice all developed in relationship with the lunar cycle. The monthly rhythm of waxing and waning light maps onto natural cycles of growth and release, action and reflection, manifestation and letting go. Working consciously with this cycle is not superstition — it is attunement to a rhythm that governs the tides, biological cycles and emotional life in ways that are both ancient and increasingly supported by modern chronobiology.

The Eight Moon Phases

The Moon completes one cycle from New Moon to New Moon in approximately 29.5 days — the synodic month. During this cycle it passes through eight distinct phases, each with its own energetic quality and recommended area of focus for ritual and inner work.

🌑
New Moon
Day 0–1 · Dark Moon
The void — complete darkness before the first sliver of light. A time of endings and beginnings simultaneously. The energetic slate is cleared. Inward, quiet, receptive. The most potent time for setting intentions.
Setting intentions · Planting seeds · New beginnings · Journaling · Silence · Meditation
🌒
Waxing Crescent
Days 1–7 · Growing light
The first tender shoots of what was planted at the New Moon. Energy slowly building. A time for taking the first concrete steps toward intentions. Hopeful, tentative, forward-looking. Resist the urge to move too fast.
First action steps · Planning · Learning · Beginning projects · Affirmations
🌓
First Quarter
Day 7 · Half illuminated
The first challenge — the half-lit Moon brings tension and decision points. Obstacles appear. This is a time for decisive action, commitment and overcoming resistance. The friction here is productive — it tests whether the intention is truly desired.
Decision-making · Overcoming obstacles · Commitment · Taking action · Problem-solving
🌔
Waxing Gibbous
Days 10–14 · Almost full
Refinement and adjustment — the intention is taking visible form but needs fine-tuning. Energy is building toward peak. A time for editing, improving and preparing for completion. Patience is required as the full Moon approaches.
Refinement · Editing · Preparation · Gratitude practice · Adjusting course
🌕
Full Moon
Day 14–15 · Peak illumination
Maximum illumination — what was hidden is revealed. Emotions run high, dreams are vivid, energy peaks. A time for celebration, gratitude and release. The Full Moon illuminates what is no longer serving. The most powerful time for release rituals.
Release rituals · Gratitude · Celebration · Completion · Illumination · Charging crystals
🌖
Waning Gibbous
Days 15–21 · Disseminating
The energy begins to turn inward. A time for sharing what has been learned and gained in the cycle — teaching, gratitude and generosity. Also a time to begin releasing what the Full Moon revealed needed to go.
Sharing wisdom · Teaching · Gratitude · Releasing · Service to others
🌗
Last Quarter
Day 21 · Half dark
The second major tension point — the half-dark Moon calls for honest re-evaluation. What needs to be forgiven, released or surrendered? A time for breaking old patterns, ending what is no longer working and making space for the approaching New Moon.
Forgiveness · Breaking patterns · Endings · Re-evaluation · Clearing space
🌘
Waning Crescent
Days 24–29 · Balsamic Moon
The dark completion — the final rest before the cycle begins again. The most introverted, restful and surrendered phase. A time for deep rest, dream work, meditation and allowing the unconscious to process the full cycle. Do not initiate — receive.
Deep rest · Dream journaling · Meditation · Surrender · Solitude · Preparation

Moon Through the Zodiac

The Moon moves through all twelve zodiac signs every 29.5 days — spending approximately 2.5 days in each sign. The sign the Moon occupies colours the emotional quality of those days and influences the focus of any ritual or intention work. This is the basis of lunar gardening, magical timing and the astrological "void of course" Moon concept.

The Art of Ritual

Ritual is intentional action performed with awareness — the opposite of habitual action performed unconsciously. The same action (lighting a candle, writing in a journal, sitting in silence) performed mechanically has no ritual power; performed with full presence and clear intention, it becomes a vehicle for transformation.

Ritual works on multiple levels simultaneously: psychologically — it creates a container for focused intention and signals the unconscious mind that something significant is happening; energetically — it works with the subtle body and the field; and symbolically — it engages the deep language of the unconscious through gesture, symbol and element.

Sacred Space
Creating a dedicated space — even temporarily — signals the unconscious that ordinary time is suspended. An altar, a cleared table, a circle drawn in imagination. The container matters.
The Four Elements
Representing Earth (salt, stone, soil), Water (a bowl of water), Fire (candle), Air (incense, feather) grounds the ritual in the physical world and engages the elemental level of reality.
Clear Intention
The most important element — knowing exactly what you are working with and why. Vague rituals produce vague results. Specific, heartfelt intention is the engine.
Closing
Every ritual needs a conscious closing — extinguishing candles, expressing gratitude, releasing the space. This grounds the energy raised and signals the unconscious that the work is complete.

New Moon Ritual

New Moon Intention Setting
Within 48 hours of the New Moon · Planting seeds
The New Moon is the most potent time for setting intentions — the energetic field is receptive, the slate is clean and the growing light of the waxing cycle will support what is planted here. The window is approximately 48 hours after the exact New Moon moment (not before — the old cycle needs to complete). This ritual works best done alone, in quiet, without distraction.
01Cleanse the space. Light incense, use sound (bell, singing bowl) or simply open windows. Clear the energy of the ordinary day from your space.
02Create your altar. Candle (black or white), something representing each element, any crystals or objects that feel relevant. Keep it simple.
03Ground yourself. Breathe consciously for 5 minutes. Feel your feet on the floor. Arrive fully in the present moment before beginning.
04Reflect on the lunar cycle just completed. What emerged? What was released? What are you carrying forward? Brief journaling.
05Set your intentions. Write 3–10 clear, present-tense intentions. Not "I want" but "I am" or "I have." Feel each one as already true. Write by hand — the physical act matters.
06Read your intentions aloud. Speaking them vibrates them into the physical. Do this slowly, with feeling.
07Seal them. Fold the paper, hold it to your heart. You may burn it (releasing the intention to the universe), keep it under your pillow, or place it on your altar until the Full Moon.
08Close the ritual. Express gratitude — to the Moon, to the elements, to yourself. Extinguish the candle consciously. Return to ordinary time.

Full Moon Ritual

Full Moon Release & Gratitude
On or within 3 days of the Full Moon · Illumination & release
The Full Moon is the peak of the cycle — maximum illumination brings what was hidden into visibility. Emotions run high, revelations come and what is no longer serving becomes impossible to ignore. This is the most powerful time for release work — consciously letting go of what has been illuminated. The Full Moon also amplifies energy, making it an excellent time for charging crystals, creating moon water and expressing gratitude for what has grown since the New Moon.
01Moon bathe if possible. Stand or sit in moonlight — even through a window. Feel the Moon's light on your skin. Take three deep breaths.
02Gratitude inventory. Write everything you are grateful for from the past cycle. Acknowledge what grew and what was received. Feel it fully.
03Identify what to release. What has the Full Moon illuminated that needs to go? A belief, a habit, a relationship dynamic, an emotion held too long? Write it clearly.
04The release ritual. Write what you are releasing on a separate piece of paper. Read it aloud: "I release [X]. I am free of [X]. I choose [what replaces it]." Then burn the paper safely — fire is the most powerful element for release.
05Charge your tools. Place crystals, oracle cards, water or any sacred objects in moonlight overnight. The Full Moon amplifies and cleanses energetically.
06Moon water. Fill a glass jar with clean water, place it in moonlight overnight with a clear intention. Use within three days — for drinking, bathing, watering plants or anointing.
07Close with celebration. The Full Moon is also a time of celebration. Mark what has been accomplished. Honour the cycle. Enjoy.

Living by the Lunar Calendar

Void of Course Moon
The period between the Moon's last major aspect in one sign and its entry into the next. Traditionally avoided for beginning new projects, signing contracts or making important decisions — things initiated during a void of course Moon tend to "come to nothing." Check a lunar calendar to track these windows.
Eclipse Seasons
Eclipses occur 4–6 times per year — Solar eclipses at New Moons, Lunar eclipses at Full Moons — when the Sun, Moon and Earth align precisely. Eclipse energy is dramatically amplified and often brings fated events, sudden changes and accelerated karma. Avoid major rituals during eclipses — allow the energy to move through.
Blue Moon
A second Full Moon in a single calendar month — occurring approximately every 2.5 years. Considered especially powerful for wishes that seem impossible — "once in a blue moon" capturing its rarity. A potent time for bold, ambitious intentions.
Supermoon
A Full or New Moon occurring when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth (perigee) — appearing up to 14% larger and 30% brighter. Its gravitational pull on the Earth's tidal systems is measurably stronger, and practitioners report that emotional and energetic intensity is significantly amplified.
Seasonal Full Moons
Traditional names for each month's Full Moon reflect seasonal and agricultural realities: Wolf Moon (January), Snow Moon (February), Worm Moon (March), Pink Moon (April), Flower Moon (May), Strawberry Moon (June), Buck Moon (July), Sturgeon Moon (August), Harvest Moon (September), Hunter's Moon (October), Beaver Moon (November), Cold Moon (December).
The Practical Approach
You do not need elaborate rituals. The most powerful lunar practice is simple: notice the New Moon and set one clear intention. Notice the Full Moon and release one thing. Do this consistently for six months and observe what changes. Consistency matters infinitely more than complexity.
