The oldest numerological system — rooted in ancient Babylon. More mystical and arguably more accurate than Pythagorean, Chaldean assigns values based on sound vibration rather than sequential position.
Chaldean numerology originates from the ancient Chaldeans of Babylon — astrologers and mystics who developed one of history's first sophisticated symbolic systems. Unlike Pythagorean numerology which assigns letters sequentially (A=1, B=2...), Chaldean assigns values based on the vibrational frequency of each letter's sound. The number 9 is considered sacred and is never assigned to a letter. Compound numbers (10–52) are preserved and interpreted rather than immediately reduced.
Which name to use? Chaldean uses the name you are most commonly known by — not necessarily the birth certificate name. If you go by a nickname or shortened name in daily life, that is what carries the active vibration. Many practitioners calculate both the birth name and the common name to see both layers.
The Chaldean table assigns letters based on phonetic sound vibration. Note that 9 is never assigned — it is the number of the divine, considered too sacred for human names. This is the most significant difference from Pythagorean. Letters with similar sounds share the same value.
Note on 9: The number 9 is intentionally absent from the Chaldean letter table. In ancient Babylonian mysticism, 9 represented the divine and infinite — too sacred to be assigned to earthly letters. However, 9 can appear as a result of calculation (e.g. a name summing to 9 or 18 or 27). It is simply never the starting assignment for any letter.

5+5+5+2+1 = 18 → compound number preserved as 18, final digit 9
Chaldean number meanings differ from Pythagorean in subtle but important ways. The Chaldean system has a more mystical and fatalistic flavour — rooted in Babylonian astrology, each number carries planetary rulership and ancient symbolic depth. Number 9 is included as a result of calculation but carries unique sacred significance.
One of the most distinctive features of Chaldean numerology is the preservation and interpretation of compound numbers (10–52). Rather than reducing everything to a single digit, Chaldean reads the compound number as a separate symbol — like a tarot card — before noting its final reduced digit. The compound number reveals the hidden or esoteric meaning; the single digit reveals the practical vibration.
Chaldean calculates fewer core numbers than Pythagorean — focusing primarily on the name vibration and the birth date. The system emphasises the compound number as equally important as the final reduced digit. Always note both: 23/5 tells a different story than 14/5, even though both reduce to 5.
| Number | Source | Formula | What It Reveals |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name Number | Common name (as known) | All letters → Chaldean values → sum | The outer vibration — how the world experiences you. The most important number in Chaldean. Use the name you are actually called, not necessarily the birth certificate name. |
| Birth Number | Day of birth only | Birth day → reduce if needed | Your natural personality and the gifts you were born with. In Chaldean, the birth day number (1–31) is particularly significant and is read with its compound meaning. |
| Life Path (Destiny) | Full birth date | DD + MM + YYYY → reduce | The path your life is unfolding along. Same concept as Pythagorean Life Path but interpreted through the Chaldean planetary rulership system. |
| Soul Urge | Vowels in common name | Vowels → Chaldean values → sum | Inner desires and motivations. In Chaldean, vowels carry the soul's true vibration — what you deeply crave beneath the surface persona. |
| Outer Personality | Consonants in common name | Consonants → Chaldean values → sum | How others perceive you — the impression you make before people know you deeply. The mask you wear in public interactions. |
| Lucky Number | Name Number + Birth Number | Name Number + Birth Number → reduce | Unique to Chaldean — the combined vibration of your name and birth number. Your personal lucky number for decisions, timing and attraction. |
