Gematria

The ancient practice of assigning numerical values to letters, words and phrases — revealing hidden connections between language, number and cosmic meaning across Hebrew, Greek and English traditions.

Gematria (from Greek geometria or Hebrew gimatria) is the practice of calculating the numerical value of words, phrases or names — and interpreting the significance of those values. Used for over 2000 years in Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah), early Christianity, Greek philosophy and now modern occultism. The premise: words that share the same numerical value share a hidden spiritual connection.

What is Gematria?

Hebrew Gematria
The original and most sacred form. Each of the 22 Hebrew letters has a fixed numerical value (1–400). Used extensively in the Torah, Talmud and Kabbalistic texts to reveal hidden meanings and divine connections in scripture.
Greek Isopsephy
The Greek equivalent of gematria. Each of the 24 Greek letters carries a numerical value. Used in ancient Greek mysticism, early Christian texts (particularly Revelation) and Neoplatonic philosophy.
English Gematria
Modern English ciphers developed from the 1500s onward — including Ordinal (A=1 to Z=26), Reverse Ordinal, and the Sumerian cipher (A=6 to Z=156). Used in modern occultism, Freemasonry and contemporary mystical analysis.
Chaldean (Phonetic)
The Chaldean system (covered separately) is technically a form of gematria — assigning values based on sound rather than letter position. Used specifically for name analysis and numerological readings in the Chaldean tradition.

Core Principle

If two words or phrases share the same gematria value, they are considered to have a hidden spiritual connection. This is used to find deeper meaning in sacred texts, reveal connections between concepts, and decode symbolic language embedded in names, titles and scriptural passages.

Hebrew Gematria

Hebrew gematria is the oldest and most sacred form. The 22 letters of the Hebrew alphabet each carry a fixed numerical value — units (1–9), tens (10–90) and hundreds (100–400). The system is called Mispar Hechrachi (standard value) in its basic form. Advanced systems include Mispar Gadol (large value using final letter forms) and Mispar Katan (reduced value).

Greek Isopsephy

Isopsephy (ἰσοψηφία) is the Greek equivalent of gematria — used extensively in ancient Greek inscriptions, oracles, early Christian texts and Neoplatonic mysticism. The 24 Greek letters follow the same unit-tens-hundreds pattern as Hebrew. Famous uses include the number 666 in Revelation (Greek: χξς) and ABRAXAS (365 = days of the year).

English Ciphers

English gematria developed much later than Hebrew or Greek — primarily from the 16th century onward through Rosicrucian, Masonic and Hermetic traditions. Several different ciphers exist. The most widely used are Simple Ordinal (A=1 to Z=26) and the English Sumerian cipher (multiples of 6). Modern occultists often cross-reference multiple English ciphers simultaneously.

Simple / Ordinal Gematria
A=1 through Z=26 · Most widely used
The most common English cipher. Each letter equals its position in the alphabet. Simple, accessible and the foundation of most modern English gematria work.

English Sumerian Gematria
A=6 through Z=156 · Multiples of 6
Each letter equals its ordinal value multiplied by 6. Based on the Sumerian sexagesimal (base-60) number system. Produces larger numbers with greater differentiation between words.

Reverse Ordinal
Z=1 through A=26 · Mirror of Ordinal
The mirror image of Simple Ordinal — Z=1, Y=2, X=3 down to A=26. Used to reveal the "shadow" or hidden dimension of a word's vibration. Often cross-referenced with Simple Ordinal.

Famous Gematria Values

Some gematria values have become significant across multiple traditions — appearing in scripture, sacred texts and mystical literature. These values are studied not for superstition but for the patterns of meaning they reveal across different languages and systems.

26
YHWH (יהוה)
Hebrew Standard · The Tetragrammaton
The four-letter name of God in Hebrew scripture: Yod(10) + Heh(5) + Vav(6) + Heh(5) = 26. Considered the most sacred gematria value in Jewish mysticism.
72
Chesed (חסד)
Hebrew · Lovingkindness
The Kabbalistic quality of divine lovingkindness and grace. 72 is also the number of divine names derived from Exodus 14:19-21 — each three letters long.
666
χξς (Chi Xi Stigma)
Greek Isopsephy · Revelation 13:18
The "Number of the Beast" from Revelation. In Greek: Chi(600) + Xi(60) + Stigma(6) = 666. Scholars debate its original referent — most likely Nero Caesar in Hebrew gematria.
365
ABRAXAS
Greek Isopsephy · Gnostic deity
The Gnostic solar deity ABRAXAS sums to 365 in Greek isopsephy — the number of days in the solar year. Deliberate encoding of cosmic cycles into divine names.
888
ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Iesous)
Greek Isopsephy · Jesus
The Greek name for Jesus sums to 888 — exactly 8 × 111, and the counterpart to 666. Early Christians saw this as evidence of divine encoding in the name itself.
137
Kabbalah (קבלה)
Hebrew Standard
The Hebrew word Kabbalah itself sums to 137 — the same as the fine-structure constant (α ≈ 1/137) in physics. A coincidence that has fascinated mystics and scientists alike.
741
LOVE
English Sumerian
In English Sumerian gematria: L(72) + O(90) + V(132) + E(30) = 324... Actually in Simple Ordinal: L(12)+O(15)+V(22)+E(5) = 54. A frequently studied word across all English ciphers.
153
Fish (ἰχθύς)
Greek · John 21:11
153 fish caught in the miraculous catch of John 21:11. Also 1³+5³+3³ = 153 (narcissistic number). The fish symbol (Ichthys) sums to 1224 = 8×153 in Greek.

Advanced Methods

Mispar Hechrachi
Standard Hebrew gematria — the most common method. Each letter receives its standard value (Aleph=1 through Tav=400).
Mispar Gadol
Large value Hebrew gematria — uses the five final letter forms (Kaf=500, Mem=600, Nun=700, Peh=800, Tzaddi=900) rather than standard values.
Mispar Katan
Reduced value — each letter value is reduced to a single digit. Aleph=1, Yod=1 (10→1), Kaf=2 (20→2). Reveals deeper patterns across different letters.
Mispar Kolel
Standard value plus the number of letters in the word. If a word has 4 letters and standard value 26, Kolel value = 30. Accounts for the word as a unit.
Atbash
Substitution cipher — the first letter (Aleph) becomes the last (Tav), the second (Beth) becomes the second-to-last (Shin), etc. Used in the Bible: Babel encoded as Sheshach.
Albam
Another substitution — the first 11 letters map to the last 11. Aleph↔Lamed, Beth↔Mem, etc. Used in Talmudic and Kabbalistic texts for encoded meanings.
Notarikon
Each letter of a word is taken as the initial of another word, creating a hidden sentence or phrase. Used to find extended meanings within single Hebrew words.
Temurah
Letter permutation — rearranging letters according to fixed rules to reveal hidden words. The 231 Gates of Sefer Yetzirah describe all possible letter pair combinations.
