El Morya — Master of the First Ray

The Chohan of the First Ray of Will and Power — the force that initiates, decides, and holds course through all resistance

El Morya is one of the most prominent figures in the Ascended Master tradition as transmitted through Theosophy and the subsequent teachings of Alice Bailey and the Summit Lighthouse. As Chohan (Lord) of the First Ray — the Ray of Will and Power — he governs the divine energy of purposeful will: the force that initiates action, establishes direction, and holds to its course through all resistance and opposition. He is particularly associated with the development of divine will in human beings — the alignment of personal will with the will of God — and with the training of spiritual leaders and decision-makers.

Will, Power, and Divine Purpose

The First Ray in the Alice Bailey system is the ray of Will and Power — the first emanation of the divine, the force through which God's purpose is established and held. It is neither aggressive nor destructive in its pure form, though its misuse can produce tyranny and ruthlessness. In its highest expression, First Ray Will is the capacity to hold steadfastly to divine purpose regardless of circumstance — the will that does not bend to comfort, fear, or opposition, but serves the greater good with absolute commitment.

El Morya embodies this quality. In the esoteric tradition he is described as having lived many significant incarnations — among them Abraham, Melchior (one of the Magi), King Arthur, Thomas Becket, and Thomas More — each marked by the willingness to hold to principle at great personal cost. Whether these historical attributions are literal or symbolic, they encode a consistent character: the will to serve truth even unto death.

The will of God is the most powerful force in the universe, and it is available to every human being who chooses to align with it. The decision to do so is itself the first act of discipleship. — El Morya, Letters of El Morya to Anna (via Helena Roerich)

The Agni Yoga Teachings and Helena Roerich

El Morya's teachings first became widely known through Helena Roerich, who from the 1920s onward received a body of teachings she attributed to El Morya and published as the Agni Yoga series — fourteen volumes covering ethics, cosmic law, and the development of spiritual consciousness. Unlike many channelled teachings, the Agni Yoga material is rigorous, demanding, and explicitly anti-mystical in the sense of discouraging passive receptivity in favour of active spiritual effort. El Morya, as transmitted through Roerich, consistently emphasises the will, discrimination, and the dangers of psychic dilettantism.

He also communicates through Helena Blavatsky's Mahatma Letters and through the more devotional transmission of the Summit Lighthouse (founded by Mark and Elizabeth Clare Prophet), where his tone is somewhat different — more encouraging, more accessible. The question of whether these represent genuine differences in the master's communication or differences in the receivers' interpretation is one that the tradition itself acknowledges without resolving.
