Electional Astrology

Horary's mirror image β€” instead of reading a chart already cast, the astrologer chooses the best possible sky under which to begin something. When should the wedding happen, the business launch, the journey start?

Electional astrology can't guarantee an outcome β€” it can only give an event the strongest possible starting foundation. A well-elected chart improves the odds; it doesn't override the underlying natal charts of the people involved.

Choosing the Sky for the Moment

Electional astrology is horary's mirror image: instead of reading a chart already cast for a question, the astrologer works backward from a future event and selects β€” elects β€” the best possible sky under which to begin it. A wedding, a business launch, a journey: electional astrology asks not "what will happen" but "when should this start, to give it the best possible foundation."

The Toolkit

Angular Benefics
Placing Jupiter or Venus near the Ascendant or Midheaven gives a supportive, visible foundation from the first moment.
Cadent Malefics
Mars and Saturn ideally sit in weaker cadent houses rather than angular, softening their disruptive potential.
Applying, Not Separating
Key aspects should be applying (still forming) β€” the event should be moving toward connection, not away from it.
Moon Condition
Ideally waxing, well-aspected, and specifically not Void of Course β€” the strongest single warning in the practice.
Relevant House Ruler
The ruler of the house tied to the event's purpose should be strong, well-dignified and well-aspected.
Fixed Stars
Traditional work checks for the Ascendant or Midheaven conjunct benevolent fixed stars β€” see Fixed Stars.

Common Applications

Weddings
β†’7th house ruler, Venus's condition
β†’Moon free of hard aspects to malefics
Business Launches
β†’10th house for reputation, 2nd for capital
β†’Mercury for contracts and communication
Travel & Journeys
β†’3rd house for short trips, 9th for long-distance
β†’Mars ideally not afflicting the relevant ruler
Medical Procedures
β†’6th and 8th houses
β†’Moon must avoid specific signs depending on body part

Red Flags

Certain configurations are near-universal disqualifiers regardless of event type: a Void of Course Moon at the elected time, the Moon in detriment or fall, the elected Ascendant ruler retrograde or badly afflicted, and eclipses within a few days of the chosen moment.

Lineage

Electional astrology runs alongside horary throughout the Hellenistic, Persian, Arabic and medieval European traditions. It reached particular prominence in medieval and Renaissance courts, where astrologers were regularly consulted to time coronations, military campaigns and treaties.
