Horary Astrology

The branch of astrology that answers a specific question — cast not for a birth, but for the exact moment the question is asked. The sky at that instant becomes the map of the answer.

Horary is question-specific, not personality-general. Unlike natal astrology, a horary chart says nothing about someone's character — it exists purely to resolve one bounded question, and traditionally becomes invalid to use again once judged.

Section 01

A Chart Cast for the Question

Horary astrology answers a specific question by casting a chart for the exact moment the question is understood by the astrologer — not for anyone's birth. "Will I get the job?" "Where is my lost ring?" The sky at the moment of the asking becomes the map of the answer.

It's the most concrete, testable branch of astrology: a horary chart makes a falsifiable prediction that resolves within a bounded timeframe. This made it the working tool of choice for astrologers for centuries — used constantly for lost objects, missing persons, legal disputes, and yes/no decisions.

Radicality — Is the Chart Fit to Judge?

Before interpreting anything, a horary astrologer checks whether the chart is even valid to answer the question — called judging radicality. Classic disqualifying conditions include the Ascendant falling in very early or late degrees, and the Moon being Void of Course — which traditionally means "nothing will come of the matter." This step is what separates horary from other divinatory practices: the chart itself can refuse to answer.

Querent, Quesited & Significators

The Querent
→The person asking the question
→Represented by the ruler of the 1st house
→Shows the querent's own state and agency
The Quesited
→The thing or person being asked about
→Ruler of whichever house governs that matter
→7th for a partner, 10th for career, 2nd for money

The heart of horary interpretation is watching whether the querent's significator and the quesited's significator will actually meet — through applying aspects, reception, or a third planet carrying the connection (translation of light). If they never come together, or a third planet blocks the aspect (prohibition), the answer is generally no.

The Toolkit

Applying Aspects
An aspect not yet exact but forming shows an event still to unfold — the core mechanic that lets horary "watch" a situation resolve.
Reception
When significators are received into each other's dignities, the connection is warmer — even a difficult aspect can succeed.
Translation of Light
A faster planet carries the connection between two planets that don't aspect directly — often a third party bringing resolution.
Prohibition & Refranation
A third planet blocks an aspect before it perfects, or a planet turns retrograde before completing — the matter falls apart.
The Moon
A general co-significator of the querent and the flow of events regardless of who else rules the chart.

Lineage

Horary techniques appear throughout the Hellenistic, Persian and Arabic traditions, but the branch reached its most systematic articulation in 17th-century England with William Lilly, whose 1647 textbook Christian Astrology remains the foundational reference for horary practice — still used, largely unchanged in method, today.
