A Triangle, Loosely Defined

The Bermuda Triangle refers to a roughly triangular region of the western Atlantic Ocean bounded by Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico, popularly associated with the unexplained disappearance of ships and aircraft. The term was coined by writer Vincent Gaddis in a 1964 Argosy magazine article, "The Deadly Bermuda Triangle," which framed the region as a "triangle of tragedy" with losses occurring "beyond the laws of chance." Charles Berlitz's 1974 bestseller The Bermuda Triangle β€” which sold roughly 20 million copies β€” cemented the legend in mainstream popular culture, in part by connecting it to unrelated maritime incidents, including the Mary Celeste mystery, which actually occurred on the opposite side of the Atlantic entirely.

What the Insurers Actually Charge

The single most concrete piece of evidence against the Triangle's supposed anomaly comes from the institution with the strongest financial incentive to detect a real one: Lloyd's of London. When asked directly by UK Channel 4 in 1992 whether the insurer had observed unusual loss rates in the region, Lloyd's confirmed the disappearances were not unusually numerous compared to any other heavily trafficked ocean area β€” and that shipping insurance premiums for Bermuda Triangle routes have not been raised above standard Atlantic rates since the 1970s. The US Coast Guard has issued a standing, on-record statement: "There is no evidence that mysterious disappearances occur with any greater frequency in the Bermuda Triangle than in any other large, well-travelled area of the ocean." The US Board on Geographic Names does not recognise the Bermuda Triangle as an official place name or maintain any dedicated incident records for it at all.

Flight 19 β€” The Case That Started It

The disappearance of Flight 19, five US Navy Avenger bombers lost on a training mission in December 1945, is the Triangle's founding case and its most frequently cited "impossible" disappearance β€” popular retellings describe the flight vanishing in perfect weather. Investigation reveals a considerably more mundane picture: the ocean that day carried swells of up to 49 feet, and squadron leader Lieutenant Charles Taylor β€” the only pilot in the formation with genuine open-ocean navigation experience β€” reportedly arrived without a functioning watch and had a documented prior history of getting lost and ditching aircraft on two earlier occasions. Compass malfunction, worsening weather, and a fatigued, disoriented flight leader making a sequence of ordinary navigational errors account for the loss without requiring any anomaly beyond human error compounded by bad luck.

Larry Kusche's 1975 investigation β€” later expanded into his 1980 book β€” went case by case through the Triangle's most famous "unexplained" incidents using original ship logs, weather records, and Coast Guard reports, and found many had been reported with significant factual errors or omissions in their popular retellings: some "disappeared" vessels had, on closer inspection, sunk in clearly documented storms; others had simply been misdated or conflated with unrelated incidents in earlier accounts that were never independently checked before being repeated.

Legacy

The region does have genuine, well-understood hazards: the Gulf Stream's powerful, fast-moving current can rapidly disperse wreckage and debris before search efforts locate it; the area sits along common hurricane paths, especially in the decades before reliable modern forecasting; and Caribbean waters here include the North Atlantic's deepest trenches alongside numerous shallow reef hazards. None of these explanations require anything beyond ordinary, if occasionally severe, maritime risk β€” which is, ultimately, the entire story: an area of real but statistically unremarkable danger, dramatised into a supernatural one by writers with a commercial interest in the dramatisation outliving several decades of contradicting data.
