Rocks That Might Generate Their Own Light

The leading scientific hypothesis is genuinely novel: the Hessdalen valley's geology is unusually rich in quartz-bearing rock, and quartz is piezoelectric β€” capable of generating an electric charge when placed under mechanical stress. Researchers including physicists Jader Monari and colleagues have proposed that geological strain in the valley's bedrock produces electron avalanches and ionic acoustic waves at the point of fracture, generating luminous plasma balls at the surface β€” a mechanism they argue could also account for the valley's documented, elevated background radon levels, since radon decay releases ionising alpha particles that further encourage plasma formation in the surrounding air. A competing but related theory proposes atmospheric plasma broadly similar to ball lightning, without the specific piezoelectric trigger mechanism.

Genuinely, honestly unresolved: more than four decades of continuous monitoring have produced substantial data and several serious, published scientific hypotheses β€” but no single theory yet accounts for every documented feature of the phenomenon, including the internal "geometrical structures" some researchers have reported observing within individual light events, a detail current piezoelectric models specifically struggle to explain.
