Void of Course Moon & Moon Phases

Two of astrology's most practical lunar techniques β€” the daily Void of Course window, when the Moon has finished its business in a sign, and the roughly monthly cycle of eight phases that maps any process of beginning, building and completing.

Two different timescales, easy to confuse. Void of Course is a short daily/multi-day window tied to the Moon's aspects before it changes sign. The eight-phase cycle is a longer, ~29.5-day arc tied to the Sun-Moon angle.

Void of Course β€” Nothing Left to Say

The Moon changes zodiac sign roughly every two and a half days, making a sequence of aspects to other planets along the way. The Void of Course (VOC) period is the stretch between the Moon's last exact aspect before it leaves its current sign and the moment it enters the next. During this window, the Moon is traditionally read as untethered, prone to outcomes that fizzle or simply don't matter as much as they seemed to.

This is one of the oldest continuously used techniques, foundational to both horary and electional practice.

The Eight Moon Phases

Separate from the daily VOC technique, the Moon also moves through a ~29.5-day cycle of phases relative to the Sun β€” traditionally divided into eight stages, each carrying its own symbolic quality.

Dane Rudhyar & the Lunation Cycle

This eight-phase framework was most influentially developed by composer and astrologer Dane Rudhyar in his 1967 book The Lunation Cycle, reframing the Sun-Moon relationship as a symbolic model of any developmental process. Rudhyar also applied the same logic to a person's natal Moon phase as a lifelong personality overlay β€” a person born under a Full Moon phase, for instance, oriented toward objectivity and culmination throughout life.
